What is Unified Communications

There are a variety of definitions of what unified communications (UC) actually is. A common definition is that UC is the integration of non real-time communication services such as email, voicemail and fax with real-time communication services such as IM, IP telephony, videoconferencing, presence information and call control.

Another definition is that unified communications is not a single product, but a set of products that provides a consistent look and feel and user experience across multiple devices, networks and media types. Here are a few descriptions of some of the common terminology linked with UC:

Presence

Presence is a key component of unified communications. It enables you to find the best person available for live contact and also shows you the state of the receiver so you can choose the best or richest mode of communications.

Mobility

Mobility is the ability to communicate using any device no matter where you are.

Unified Messaging

Unified Messaging is about the integration of email, voicemail and ultimately video mail, using existing enterprise contact directories as a common database.

Video Conferencing

Video conferencing brings a new dimension to traditional voice calling by letting users ‘meet’ face-to-face with remote individuals from wherever they happen to be.
