Google is set to integrate video conferencing into its Chrome browser only weeks following Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype. The video conferencing software, WebRTC, is a technology acquired from Google’s acquisition of Global IP Solutions who specialise in video conferencing and internet telephony.
The technology is likely to be beneficial to Gmail as the video and audio features require a plugin to enable usage. The Gmail chat facility is becoming more important as Google looks to develop its VoIP service.
The integration of WebRTC into Gmail is likely to be just the start of Google’s plans to develop the video conferencing software into a web standard for communication.
