When one of Icelands Volcano’s, Eyjafjallajökull, erupted in April 2010 it produced a huge ash cloud which spread across most of Europe causing chaos for aviation authorities resulting in them grounding one hundred thousand flights.
As a result of the flight disruption, business individuals were unable to attend important meetings. Many organisations knew that business couldn’t just ground to a halt because of mother nature and also recognised there were no guarantee’s a similar event wouldn’t cause disruption at any point in the future. This resulted in many of Europe’s business people turning to video conferencing.
Regus, a workspace provider, recorded a 180% month on month increase in video conferencing enquiries from April to May 2010. In 2011 Regus is continuing to receive high levels of video conferencing enquiries with a 75% increase on 2010.
Recognising the productive, cost effective solution, video conferencing has become the choice of communication for businesses allowing them to reduce travel costs, reduce their carbon footprint, and achieve the same results. This alone is reason for a business to invest into a video conferencing solution even when there isn’t a huge ash cloud blanketing our skies.
The volcanic ash cloud taught businesses across the globe that communication over video can replace time consuming and expensive air travel, and the ash cloud in May 2011 will no doubt raise the awareness of video conferencing once again.
